Pondering Gaiman's Law of Superhero Films

Neil Gaiman's Journal | Dec 26, 2008 06:33PM

Back in May I posted,Had a conversation with Paul Levitz the other day about Gaiman's Law of Superhero Movies*, which is: the closer the film is to the look and feel of what people like about the comic, the more successful it is (which is something that Warners tends singularly to miss, and Marvel tends singularly to get right) and the conversation went over to Watchmen, which had Paul explaining to me that the film is obsessive about how close it [...]

A DC Question for Discussion

Comics Worth Reading | Dec 26, 2008 05:28PM

The only good thing about DC’s obsessive nostalgic navel-gazing — writing stories whose only purpose is to reintroduce the elements the writers read when they were younger — is that they often have to reprint the original stories so the new ones make sense. So those of us who remember when it was much harder to read classic stories, we appreciate the wide-ranging reprint volumes now available. Agree? Disagree? The Fifth Day of Comic-mas: Five Gory Things

A Comic A Day... | Dec 26, 2008 04:47PM

Yes, "the twelve days of comic-mas" isn't moving along nearly as fast as the actually holiday season is, but I've been distracted by another holiday countdown: my twelve nights of consecutive karaoke. I'm determined to finish these reviews, though, and I've given myself until New Year's Day to do so. Heck, if you follow some religious traditions, Christmas doesn't technically end until January 6, dubbed Little Christmas, which honors the arrival of the Wise Men. I hope it doesn't come to [...]

Mostly a test

The Savage Critic(s) | Dec 26, 2008 03:29PM

I can't quite figure out if something is broken with our blog, or what, but Douglas has had a post pending for 3 days that JUST WON'T PUBLISH, so I thought I'd post a little test thing here to see if it is his message, or if it is the blogJust to keep things vaguely on subject, I was complaining in Tilting last week that December was horrible. And it mostly has been. However, this last week has been really terrific, [...]

Wonder Woman Companion Cancelled

Comics Worth Reading | Dec 26, 2008 02:52PM

A couple of months ago, I was excited to hear about TwoMorrows’ Wonder Woman Companion by Andy Mangels. Now, I’ve noticed that it’s been cancelled: WONDER WOMAN COMPANION BOOK CANCELLED! No further news is available. Andy Mangels regrets that the decision was made. (Here’s the original description via Google cache.) That’s a shame. I wonder if DC was behind that decision. It wouldn’t be the first time that they pulled a cease-and-desist on a fan project that was more complete than [...]

Amazing 1966 BATMAN TV SHOW Custom Action Figure Dolls by Darkside Customs

Bat-Blog | Dec 26, 2008 12:50PM

A new friend to the Bat-Blog, named Rick, sent me an e-mail about his cool hobby of making custom dolls & action figures. He calls his company DARKSIDE CUSTOMS & his work is totally amazing! His focus is on the many different characters from the classic 1966 Batman TV Show. The attention to detail is totally insane! Plus, I really enjoy that he made a few of the obscure villains. Now

The Second Treadmill Day of Christmas (2008)

The Comic Treadmill | Dec 26, 2008 12:49PM

A hearty Thwip Thwip to all Treadmillers today as Mag and I talk about four Spider-Man covers we like. One surprising thing—to me at least, I'll let Mag speak for himself—was how few remarkable Spider-Man covers there were compared...

Merry Christmas

downthetubes.net | Dec 26, 2008 11:49AM

The final Christmas cover and a cover that just screams Seventies at you.Since the cover date was 25 December 1977 Look and Learn Plus Speed and Power went all out with this gem from artist Ron Embleton. Having presumably finished his rounds, Santa enjoys a trip on what many young children must have also been playing on that Christmas, a skateboard. Not, of course, one of the long wooden and heavily illustrated boards of today but one of those small garishly [...]

New For 2009: Hot Wheels 1966 Batmobile Car By Mattel

Bat-Blog | Dec 26, 2008 11:33AM

There's gonna be a few new variations on the Hot Wheels 1966 Batmobile Car that has caught a lot of people by surprise. It looks like Mattel will create a reissue of the '66 Batmobile they made last year ( what a surprise, ha ha! ) for 2009. This new version will sport some new tires on the car & the header card will have 2 variations: one has a plain background with concept art of the Batmobile

Let the monkey row: Douglas dips into some 12/17 Marvels

The Savage Critic(s) | Dec 26, 2008 09:47AM

THOR GOD-SIZE SPECIAL #1 is a very pretty-looking comic, and I don't mind paying the $4 Marvel toll, even for a series I don't normally read, to get a 38-page Matt Fraction story plus a Walt Simonson reprint. (A 22-page story, on the other hand... well, I suspect I won't be buying certain titles much longer.) It's a Fraction riff on a particularly charged scene from 1985's THOR #362, which is the backup reprint, and it's got fancy high-gloss artwork from [...]

Snowbound Friday

Comics Should Be Good! | Dec 26, 2008 09:46AM

As I write this, my hometown of Seattle is recovering from the worst snowstorm we’ve had in two decades. What’s embarrassing about this is that we are so very bad at dealing with winter weather. Historically you’d think we’d be better at it. We’re the last major U.S. seaport between here and Alaska, this town was founded by loggers and fur trappers and outdoor types of all kinds… and yet… …When it snows, everyone here reacts as though Armageddon has arrived. [...]
