Cute Family Photo: MAX, The Boy Wonder!!

Bat-Blog | Nov 18, 2008 03:49PM

Last night I received an e-mail from a Bat-Blog Reader, named Stu, who had this incredibly sweet family photo to share. This is his son MAX as Robin, The Boy Wonder!! This is probably the most adorable photo I have EVER received! Stu explained it a lot better in his e-mail & wrote, "My name is Stu and I live in NJ. I am a huge Batman fan - one day I will have to send you pictures of my

Satan And The Devil-Bull

Fortress Of Fortitude | Nov 18, 2008 02:36PM

If you thought yesterday’s story was a bit off, take a gander at “Satan And The Devil-Bull” from Ace Magazines’ Web of Mystery # 11! It’s interesting to note that pre-Code comics didn’t bother with cute little aliases for The Evil One. No Neron, no Mephisto … it’s Satan, pure and simple. And as the following story points out, it’s unwise to deal with the Devil in any guise. You’d think characters in horror comics would’ve learned that by now [...]

Comics Economics, Part 8

Kleefeld on Comics | Nov 18, 2008 02:35PM

So, are we in a recession or aren't we? If so, are comics immune?(By the way, normally, I try to make all of my posts as internationally accessible as possible, despite my obvious U.S.-centrism. With so many countries having a multitude of different fiscal issues, though, I'm going to have to limit my post today talking exclusively about the U.S. economy. Hopefully, some of the basic ideas are somewhat transferable internationally.)By definition, a recession is two consecutive quarters of negative capital [...]

Marvel Price Increases

Comic By Comic | Nov 18, 2008 02:35PM

Sneaky bastards. Looks like Marvel's $3.99 price point is continuing to roll out, and not just in the mini-series any more. I don't mind paying a bit more for extra content, but a whole buck more for the same old number of pages?Per their February solicits, Hulk, Punisher: Frank Castle, and Dark Avengers are all topping out at 32 pages total for $3.99. Most of the other $3.99 books that are non-limited series have 40 pages or more, but these three [...]

Ergot

Forbidden Planet Blog | Nov 18, 2008 02:34PM

Over on Boing Boing Mark Frauenfelder posts this great pic of Alvin Buenaventura holding up the massive Kramers Ergot Volume 7. No, I don’t think Alvin is small, its just that the book is absolutely huge; any larger and it might collapse into a cartoon black hole and suck in any passing cartoonist. Pricey? Sure, but gods it looks fabulous and something you’ll cherish in your collection for years.

From Our Continental Correspondent - Guy Peellaert dies

Forbidden Planet Blog | Nov 18, 2008 02:34PM

Belgian rock illustrator and cartoonist Guy Peellaert (previously profiled here) passed away on Monday, November 17th after a serious heart failure.  He was 74 and still hard at work, creating a series of ten portraits of Belgian rock musicians for the Belgian media weekly Focus Knack. As editor Karel De Graeve wrote on the Focus Knack blog, only eight of these portraits were published : Jacques Brel (including a cameo of the artist), van Soeur Sourire, Front 242, Soulwax, Arno Hintjens, [...]

Sometimes coming up with titles is the hardest part

The Savage Critic(s) | Nov 18, 2008 02:34PM

Just a couple quickie reviews so I don't feel bad...!AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #577: I quite liked this issue as a done-in-one Spidey/Punisher team-up. Zeb Wells turns in an amusing script, and the art by Paolo Rivera is a really nice style seldom seen in mainstream comics -- kind of a bit like Paul Pope, really. I especially like his hand-drawn sound effects: check those "thwip"s on the cover! All in all a solid GOOD issue.ASM is in such a weird place right [...]

Seek, and Ye Shall Find: The Seekers #1

A Comic A Day... | Nov 18, 2008 02:33PM

Continuing my feeble exercise to explore black comic book heroes in an attempt to understand the idolism around Senator Barack Obama's approaching presidency, I dug up my unread copy of The Seekers #1, acquired for a quarter at Frank & Sons. Judging this issue by its cover (not recommended), The Seekers is a series deliberately targeting black youth, not unlike a title from DC's Milestone Comics, right down to the obligatory skateboard. (If you haven't read Dwayne McDuffie's poignant pitch for [...]
