"You've NEVER read a Spidey story like P.O.V3!" So proclaimed the cover of this week's Amazing Spider-Man. I hate to complain about the book because even though I loathed the way they got here, I have been enjoying the new status quo - but this issue was just a damp squib. The problem is that I have seen it before. I've seen the 'different points of view of the same event' thing done on everything from E.R. to Star Trek: The Next [...]

I declare July 5 to be "Independents Day" for the celebration of independent comics. I celebrated by reading something I've been dreading for a long time: Invincible.I first heard of Invincible from the collectors set of the Heroclix they put with him and his cast. Since they, I'd heard a lot about how good it was, and that was what had me so frightened. Let me not fall in love with another universe to follow!Well, I picked up issue 50, and [...]

On January 7, 1957, a new strip was published in the Flemish newspaper De Standaard. It featured a somewhat strange little guy, blessed with an enormous, bolbous nose and wearing a white labcoat. Meneerke Peeters, as he was called, was the creation of Flemisch cartoonist Joë Meulepas (or Pil, as he liked to sign his work). Even though Meneerke Peeters was an everyman in many ways, Pil tended to steer his hero into situations that were fairly bizarre, absurd and [...]

It's tonight. Pull on your Dalek slippers. Get the Doctor Who chocolate from the fridge. Take the phone off the hook because, believe it or not, there may be some people not watching it. And enjoy.65 minutes of new "New Who" and we will know what the current season has been building up to. Russell T Davies episodes tend to be the Chinese takeaway of Doctor Who stories, brilliant at the time but leaving you with a hollow feeling a few [...]

Thunderbirds. Stingray. The Avengers. Doctor Who. Apart from being all top notch TV programs what else do these icons of the 60s and 70s have in common? Simple - they all appeared in comic strips of one description or another. Of course, there are many more out there. (cover of TV21 showcasing the immortal Thunderbirds from 1967) Lady Penelope. Captain Scarlet. The Persuaders. The list goes on and on. Those strips were featured in a variety of comics and magazines, now [...]

Tank Girl returns to Brit comics soon, with original co-creator Alan C Martin being joined by Rufus Dayglo (what a brilliant name) for Skidmarks which will make its bow in the Judge Dredd Megazine issue #275. Which is good news, although as Steve Holland on Bear Alley notes, that same issue is also causing a bit of a storm on the 2000 AD forums because the 2000 AD Extreme, which is a reprint-only title, is stopping at issue #30 and [...]

The BBC has a video interview with Doctor Who supremo Russell T Davies discussing the difficulties of trying to keep some plot points secret ahead of a show’s transmission in the modern, multi-media digital age. (POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNER - if you haven’t seen the penultimate episode from last week you may want to avoid the next bit). We’ve all been following the (often totally made-up-by-tabloid-hacks) speculation over whether David Tennant will return or not as the Doctor, something which went into [...]

...for the overwhelmingly adorable sight of Kid Spock and Baby Scotty:The splash page for the issue is pretty good, too...it's supposed to represent the "de-aging" process the two characters endure in this story:...but it looks more like Spock and Scotty have invited their bratty lookalike kid nephews along for the adventure, like the 23rd century equivalents of Pipeye, Pupeye, Poopeye, and Peepeye. images from Star Trek #42 (Jan '77) - art by Alden McWilliams

The series concludes in this volume. I haven’t read book two, so I’m not sure how Shea wound up living in the mountains with a mysterious black-winged girl. Flock of Angels Book 3Buy this book Her people can fully retract their wings, unlike him. So even where he might fit in, he doesn’t, although most are nice enough to him. Still, there are a bunch of weird things about their society, things Shea finds wrong and disturbing. However, they risk dying [...]

Joe covered this on Thursday, but I just wanted to add my voice to it as well; Oliver Lambden of Tales From The Flat (see our review here) got in touch with news of the Tales From The Flat movie (or a 10 minute degree show film, whatever you prefer to call it): London Underground Comics MMU Degree Show Film. The film is a mashup of comic art / animation and documentary following Oliver and Lawrence of Tales From The Flat [...]

We can’t imagine a better way to celebrate Independence Day than reliving the adventures of comics’ original sentinel of liberty - The Shield! That’s right. Months before Steve Rogers donned his chain-mail and wing-eared cowl, Joe Higgins defended the red, white and blue as MLJ Comics’ star-spangled G-Man. (Actually, a quick look at Wikipedia reveals that Higgins himself was beaten to the punch by DC’s Mister America … but the Keeper won’t let facts get in the way of a [...]

We all know that this month almost every single magazine published will have THE DARK KNIGHT Batman & Joker covers! Here's an example of a really nice one, Entertainment Weekly! I love the "tragedy & comedy" theme with the art direction, nice. Also, here's a link to the cover story on their official website:

Well, it looks like TOYOTA RACING has teamed up with Warner Bros to promote the new Batman movie THE DARK KNIGHT. Yeah, like they need MORE help hyping this movie, ha ha! To be honest I am not that much of a racing fan but I do respect the drivers for their talents & always appreciate the beauty of the special cars they [...]

Although the Broadway musical "It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's Superman" general received positive reviews, it closed less than 4 months after it opened (only 129 performances from March 29-July 17, 1966). Obviously, it didn't quite grab the theater-going public's attention, even with the enormously hot Batman series that had been running since January. So why ABC decided, 9 years later, to produce a late-night TV-movie version may never be known. And having had no exposure to the live-stage version, I can't imagine [...]

As required by the Blogosphere BylawsTM, any post I make today needs to focus on the subject of Independence Day, America, or patriotism in some capacity. I could talk about Captain America, The Shield, the Star-Spangled Kid, or any of a host of other flag-draped do-gooders. I could be doubly-topical and talk about that Alex Ross Superman/Obama mash-up. I could be somewhat snarky and write a "Declaration of Independents" touting the virtues of the small press. But you know me -- [...]

I'd say there were spoilers for this week's Batman #678 below, but that would imply that I had a clue what was going on.I guess Morrison really has been raiding the back issues, like Batman #113, a Silver Age goofball tale where Batman is transported to the planet Zur-En-Arrh by the Batman of that planet. And yes, it's as stupid as it sounds....Not only does he have a super-telescope, but ol'Batman of Zur-En-Arrh also has...the Bat-Radia!At the end of their adventure, [...]
